Carolina is a long-time gator, originally obtaining her bachelor’s degree at UF in Zoology. She then completed her DVM degree at the UF College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008 with certification in Aquatic Animal Health. After graduating, Carolina began working with the US Navy Marine Mammal Program, where she is now a supervising veterinarian for a satellite facility focused on swimmer defense at Kings Bay in Georgia. Carolina entered the Physiology and Genomics graduate program in January of 2020 under the supervision of Dr. Leah Reznikov with co-mentorship provided by Dr. Gordon Mitchell. Carolina’s research investigated innovative ways to improve care of large diving marine mammals during anesthetic procedures. Carolina was awarded her doctorate on August 11, 2023, during the UF summer commencement ceremony. Carolina will continue to oversee the swimmer defense program at Kings Bay where she will play an important role in shaping the research programs and help identify priority research interests.
